I immigrated with my family to the United States from South Korea in third grade, and I’ve lived through what it feels like to navigate life and education in this country. My parents sacrificed so much to give me this opportunity to live, study and start my own business here, so in this episode, I wanted to share some of the big lessons that I’ve learned (so far!) in the hopes that you find them relatable, insightful and motivating to you.

TUNE IN BELOW:
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN ABOUT IN THIS EPISODE:
- My background story as an immigrant to the United States and what my own college admission journey looked like.
- How I learned that success is not linear and that more than just passion is needed to be successful.
- Something that is harming students who are applying to colleges right now.
- The ways in which following what’s expected of you from society can cost you later on.
- The importance of being aware of your mindset and the way I personally like to reframe any scarcity beliefs that I may have.
- A common misconception around your future career and a specific question to ask yourself, especially for parents.
- A final reminder to value the process/journey more than the result.
NOTABLE QUOTES:
“Over the years I’ve learned that success is truly not linear…I think what really makes someone successful is not just passion, but grit.”
“Comparing yourself to your friends, your cousin [and] people online does not serve you any purpose. It does not get you to do anything better.”
“There are thousands of amazing colleges in the United States that serve so many people well. Going to an Ivy League school does not automatically make you rich or famous; you still have to put in the work.”
“Even the careers that are existent today might not be there by the time you graduate from college. So, you want to hone in your strength so that your strength becomes irreplaceable.”
