Welcome students and parents, to the Demystifying College Admissions podcast! The purpose of this show is to inspire high school students to identify their passions and learn about the most up-to-date college admissions strategies, from guests and experts in all industries! I’m celebrating the first episode today by sharing my story.
I immigrated to the United States from Korea in the 3rd grade and quickly got caught up in the “rat race” throughout high school – there was nothing I wanted more than the best GPA, the best SAT scores, and to get into the best college. Let’s just say I was a pretty competitive student who worked hard and studied hard. Failure wasn’t an option.
While I initially couldn’t afford college, I applied to several of my dream schools anyway, and was surprised to see that I got into most of them.
I stopped hanging out with my high school friends.
I studied a major I ended up hating.
Eventually, I took a year off to gain some clarity and along the way, began tutoring students at local elementary schools and high schools. I counseled high school students that didn’t have access to counselors. Eventually, this part-time hobby fueled into something more – a passion that was evolved into what Julie Kim Consulting is today!
I’ve noticed a lot of patterns on this journey: Students don’t tell their parents everything, communication is a major struggle, and many students find themselves equipped with a stagnant, fixed mindset, believing that they’re not good enough or smart enough to get into their dream school.
I’m excited to share insightful interviews and case studies in the coming weeks that will break these barriers for parents and teens alike, to show them that it is possible, and that we are all put on this planet with special gifts.
